David Scherer and I are working on remaining bugs in the new Visual 4, with the hope of soon making a beta release for people to try out before it moves to production status.
We hope to get from the user community not only bug reports but also critiques of the API (Application Programming Interface — the syntax and behavior of Visual).
As with previous beta releases of Visual 4 initially created by Jonathan Brandmeyer, this new version offers transparency, local as well as distant lights, and surface textures (the latter now implemented in terms of materials such as wood or plastic). However, details of the API and the underlying architecture have changed, and programs written with older beta versions may need to be revised. Programs written with the production version, Visual 3, will continue to work unless they used certain specific Numeric array operations that are different in the numpy module that is now supported.
